Hi,

Programming languages are only useful if Librarians intend to create or modify the software they use. Of more use is the training in how to navigate applications they are likely to encounter, such as Koha, Google Apps, LibraryThing and others.
Knowing how a database functions may become less important than knowing which one to access for the data needed to resolve user questions.
As to a suggestion for I.T. training for Librarians:
How to use any innovative storage and retrieval applications, Chats,Google Apps, Blogs, Search engines, Access or Oracle database navigation (how to create and use them), Library Circulation and cataloging software/applications.
Librarians may need to some acquaintance with programming languages, but certainly JavaScript and HTML.
